Teens name businesses 'Youth Friendly'
The Bicycle Shop: The Bicycle Shop will receive a Youth Friendly Business award at the Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on April 28.
American teens are big spenders. Youth spend an average of $103 weekly. That's about $175 billion a year.
Spirit of Youth honors businesses that know how valuable their youth customers are. With their Youth Friendly Business program, the Spirit of Youth Teen Action Council has been recognizing local businesses they consider "Youth Friendly." It is no easy feat to win this award. To be considered, businesses need to fall under the following criteria:
Treat youth customers with respect
Hire youth, encourage their school success, and prepare youth for future careers
Support community and school activities for youth

Nenana's First Gates Millennium Scholar Announced!
The NSLC Student Support Services Office is pleased to announce that one of our student residents and esteemed Nenana City Public School graduating seniors, Heidi Renee Kiunya (Kongiganak) has been certified as a 2008 Gates Millennium Scholars Program awardee. The American Indian Graduate Center (which administers the Gates Millennium Scholars competition for Native American students) certified Heidi's unprecedented distinction in a communiqu dated April 8, 2008. Heidi is forthwith to be recognized as a Gates Scholar duly commended for her "strong leadership,[url=http://www.xantrex.cc]cheap louis vuitton[/url], community service and academic achievements" further distinguishing her as a "Leader for America's Future."
As stated by Gates Millennium Scholars/AIGC Scholars Director, Sam Deloria, "the GMS program is more than a scholarship." Indeed, Heidi will be the beneficiary of the multidimensional components of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program including: Leadership and Scholar Relations Programs, Academic Empowerment Services, a mentoring program, an online resource center in addition to attendance at the annual GMS leadership conference. In terms of postsecondary educational funding, Heidi's status as a Gates Scholar entitles her to a renewable scholarship for the duration of her college studies (up to and beyond the masters and doctoral levels provided compliance with GMS guidelines is achieved).
Heidi is a personable, animated and dedicated student who has excelled athletically in addition to her academic attributions. She will be attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks this fall, majoring in Accounting. Heidi's awarding is emblematic of the Nenana City School District's commitment to academic excellence. Nenana has three remaining Gates Millennium Scholars finalists who should be receiving word regarding their status within the next few days. The Gates Millennium Scholars award is a meritbased scholarship with over 13,000 overachieving high school seniors competing for what is tantamount to an estimable and prestigious academic distinction with concomitant national recognition.
In addition to Heidi's awarding, the Nenana Student Living Center was honored to have Elizabeth Williams and Marty Kaler, from the University of Alaska Southeast and the University of Alaska Anchorage respectively, deliver presentations on the myriad educational opportunities available at the postsecondary level here in the State of Alaska.
